I was stunned. Dad's Music was no fancy, city music shop. I wondered how Dad even made it up in this rural Adirondack area of New York. Generosity can truly be stunning. When have you experienced gifts of any sort as giver or receiver?

I was playing music in an historical village area of the county fair. A Native American woman was exhibiting facets of Native life. She was wearing a large, hand-beaded amulet necklace. I immediately told her how beautiful it was. What I did not think of was that gift-giving is very important in many Native cultures. She handed the necklace to me. I tried to resist a bit, but also realized that it was traditionally important to her to give it to me. I will treasure it forever.

What a neat story, Nancy. I have experienced that with some newly-acquainted friends from Jordan. They run the local Subway and because we talk with them, ask them about their culture, share our son's Islamic Studies professorship, say a few words in Arabic, and tell them about our trip to Jordan we are showered with gifts----cookies and now special Jordanian desserts that Muna makes for us. Sometimes I do not know how to merely accept! You are right.....it is part of their culture to give.
